Instructions

Super Mario RPG uses turn-based battles like a traditional RPG, but adds a timing layer on top: pressing the action button at the right moment during an attack deals bonus damage, and timing a button press right before an enemy's hit reduces the damage you take.

The party mixes familiar Mario cast members with new original characters like Mallow and Geno, each bringing different attacks and special moves, and swapping who's in your active party of three matters against different enemy types.

Exploration outside of battle includes light platforming and puzzle-solving on top of the usual RPG town-and-overworld structure, which was unusual for the genre at the time and remains one of the game's most distinct touches.

Tips to Master Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Practice the timing window for each character's attacks — since bonus damage and reduced damage both depend on it, learning the rhythm for your active party pays off in every fight, not just tough ones.

Block on every enemy attack, not just the scary ones

Because a well-timed block reduces incoming damage regardless of the attack, it's worth trying on every hit rather than saving the reflex for attacks that look dangerous.

Rotate party members to match enemy weaknesses

Certain enemies are noticeably more vulnerable to specific attack types, so swapping your active three before a tough fight is often better than always using the same trio.
