Genre: Platformer
Release: 1991
Platforms: SNES (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, jump with Z and hold X to run. Holding X is not optional - Mario's running speed is required for most long jumps, and the same button picks up and throws shells and blocks. The spin jump on S bounces off enemies that would normally hurt you and breaks blocks beneath you.

Ride Yoshi and use his tongue. Yoshi eats most enemies, and swallowing different coloured shells grants different abilities - a red shell lets him spit fire, a blue one lets him fly. You keep Yoshi between levels if you finish carrying him, and losing him is usually worse than losing a power-up.

The cape is the best item in the game. With a running start you can take off and stay airborne almost indefinitely by alternating dive and climb, which trivialises many levels and is essential for reaching some secret exits. Learning the rhythm - tap to climb as you lose height - takes a few minutes and changes the whole game.

Controls

Arrow keys — run, duck and climb
X — run - hold it, and it also throws items
Z — jump
S — spin jump
Enter — START - and SELECT is V on the map screen

Tips to Master Super Mario World

The counter people chase is exits, not stages, because many levels have a hidden second goal behind a secret route. Finding them opens new paths on the world map, including the Star Road shortcuts and the Special World. It is the first Mario game to make exploration of the map itself a mechanic, and it is why the game sustains a hundred hours where its predecessors sustained ten.

Yoshi changed the series permanently

Yoshi debuted here as a rideable mount with a tongue that eats almost anything, and he has been a fixture of Nintendo since. Mechanically he functions as an extra hit point that runs away when struck, which creates the specific panic of chasing a fleeing Yoshi across a level. He also lets you cross gaps by sacrificing him mid-air, a move the game never teaches you.

The Star Road and the Special World

Hidden exits lead to the Star Road, a set of warp points connecting distant parts of the map, and through it to the Special World - eight brutally difficult levels with names like Tubular and Awesome. Finishing them changes the game's palette and turns the Koopas into Mario masks, which is a strange and memorable reward for the hardest content in the game.

A launch title that defined a console

Shipping with the hardware meant Super Mario World was most people's first SNES experience, and it was built to show off what the machine could do - larger sprites, smooth parallax scrolling and a much bigger colour palette than the NES. That it remains one of the best-regarded platformers ever made, rather than merely a good demo, is unusual for a launch game.
