Play Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Platformer
Release: 1992
Platforms: Game Boy (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, jump with Z and hold X to run. The physics here are much closer to the mainline console games than to the original Super Mario Land, which had a distinctly odd feel - jumps arc predictably and Mario has proper momentum, so anything you learned from Super Mario World transfers.

Find the six golden coins. Each is guarded by the boss at the end of one of six themed zones - the Tree, the Space, the Macro, the Pumpkin, the Mario and the Turtle zones - and you need all six before the castle will open. Because the zones are largely non-linear, a zone that is giving you trouble can simply be left for later.

Get the carrot. Alongside the mushroom and fire flower there is a carrot power-up that gives Mario rabbit ears and lets him slow his descent and glide, which is the single most useful item for reaching hidden areas. Bonus stages between levels let you gamble coins for extra lives and power-ups.

Controls

Arrow keys — run, duck and swim
Z — jump
X — run, and throw fireballs when powered up
Enter — START - begin and pause
V — SELECT

Tips to Master Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Wario was created for this game as a rival built specifically to be Mario's opposite, and he is the final boss of it. He proved popular enough to take over the series entirely - the next game in this line was Wario Land, starring him. Very few villains introduced as a one-off end up displacing the protagonist, which makes this a notable piece of Nintendo history rather than just a good handheld platformer.

A map you can take in your own order

The overworld lets you approach most zones freely rather than in a fixed sequence, which was unusual for a handheld platformer in 1992 and does a lot to reduce frustration. If the Space Zone's low gravity is not working for you, go and do the Pumpkin Zone instead. That structure is closer to Mega Man's stage select than to a traditional Mario world list.

Bigger sprites, better feel

The first Super Mario Land used tiny sprites and idiosyncratic physics because the developers were working on unfamiliar hardware. This sequel doubles the character size and rebuilds the movement to match the console games, and the difference is immediate. It is one of the clearest examples of a team's second attempt on a platform being transformatively better than the first.

Generous by design

There are a lot of extra lives available, the bonus games hand out more, and the game saves your progress - which together make it noticeably gentler than most Mario titles of the era. That was deliberate for a handheld played in short bursts on a bus, and it means the game can be finished by players who would bounce off Super Mario World's later levels.
