Genre: Puzzle · Wrapping Sokoban
Release: Sep 13, 2020
Platforms: Browser

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys or WASD, pushing any block you walk into. The standard Sokoban rules apply otherwise - you can push but never pull, so a block driven into a bad position stays there until you undo.

The board wraps on every axis. A block pushed off the right edge arrives at the left, and the same is true vertically, which means the shortest route to a target is often through a wall you thought was a boundary. Reading the grid as a torus rather than a rectangle is the whole adjustment the game asks you to make.

Undo and restart are both bound and both are essential. In a wrapping puzzle the consequences of a push are much harder to see coming than in a normal one, because a block can travel around and collide with something on the far side of the board, so stepping back a move is routine rather than an admission of defeat.

Controls

Arrow keys / WASD — move, pushing whatever is in front of you
Z / Backspace — undo the last move
X / Space / Enter — confirm menu selections
R — restart the current puzzle

Tips to Master Edge Not Found

Sokoban players build a strong instinct that walls are safe boundaries and corners are traps. Remove the edges and both intuitions invert: there are no corners in the usual sense, and a block you push away from you may arrive behind you. The puzzles are constructed specifically around the moments where that inversion matters.

A neat reading of the 404 theme

The competition's 2020 theme was 404, the web's not-found error. Rather than building a game about broken links, Hermans applied the idea to geometry - the edge of the board is the thing that cannot be found. It is a much better fit for a puzzle mechanic than the literal reading, and it gives the game its title.

Think in destinations, not directions

Because a push can send a block all the way around the board, planning by direction stops working. The productive method is to identify which square each block must end on, then work out which single push lands it there - counting the wrap if necessary - rather than nudging blocks gradually toward a goal.
