Genre: Sports · Tennis
Release: 1991
Platforms: SNES (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys and press Enter to serve. The four face buttons map to Z, X, A and S, and each produces a different shot - flat, topspin, lob and slice. Which one you press matters far more than where you are standing, because the ball's bounce and speed change completely with the spin you put on it.

Position before the ball arrives. The game gives you time to reach a shot only if you start moving as your opponent swings, not when the ball crosses the net. Watching their body rather than the ball is the single habit that separates players who rally comfortably from players who are always stretching.

Use the lob against anyone who rushes the net, and the slice to keep the ball low on grass. The computer opponents at higher difficulty close on the net aggressively, and a well-timed lob over their head is often a clean winner where a drive would simply be volleyed back past you.

Controls

Tips to Master Super Tennis

Hard court, clay, grass and carpet are not cosmetic. Clay slows the ball and sits it up, rewarding patient baseline rallies; grass keeps it low and fast, which favours serve-and-volley; carpet is faster still. Choosing a surface that suits your style, or one that does not suit your opponent's, is a real strategic decision and it is why the game has aged as well as it has.

Singles, doubles and four players

There are twenty selectable players with distinct attributes, and the game supports doubles - meaning with enough controllers it becomes a four-player game, which was a genuine rarity in 1991. Playing doubles changes the game substantially, because court coverage becomes about positioning relative to your partner rather than simply chasing the ball.

Tournament mode is the long game

Beyond exhibition matches there is a full circuit to work through, with rankings and progressively better opposition. It is the mode the game is built around, and the difficulty ramp is well judged - early rounds let you settle into the shot system, and by the later stages you need to be varying spin deliberately rather than hitting everything flat.

Playing an SNES game on a keyboard

The four face buttons land on Z, X, A and S here, with the shoulder buttons on Q and E and START on Enter. That puts all four shot types within reach of one hand while the other works the arrows, which suits tennis better than it suits most SNES genres. Every binding can be changed from the emulator's control settings if the defaults feel awkward.
