Bomberman Unblocked

Play Bomberman free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Action · Maze
Release: 1987
Platforms: Classic NES Series on GBA (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys and drop a bomb with X. Bombs detonate in a cross after a short delay and destroy soft blocks, enemies and you without discrimination. Every stage is a grid of indestructible pillars and destructible blocks, and you are looking for the door concealed beneath one of the blocks.

Clear all the enemies before you take the exit. Reaching the door without killing everything does not complete the stage, so the objective is really two objectives: find the exit and clear the field. Blowing up the door itself with a bomb spawns extra enemies, so be careful where you place things once you have found it.

Collect the power-ups hidden under blocks. Fire extends your blast, extra bombs let you place more at once, and the remote control lets you detonate on your own timing with Z instead of waiting for the fuse. There are also hazardous items in some versions, so grabbing everything without thinking is not always correct.

Controls

Arrow keys — move through the maze
X — drop a bomb
Z — detonate remotely, with the remote control power-up
Enter — START - begin and pause
V — SELECT

Tips to Master Bomberman

The multiplayer Battle Mode that defines Bomberman for most people came later. This original is a solo maze game with a time limit per stage, closer in feel to a puzzle arcade title than to the four-player chaos of the SNES entries. Playing it makes clear how much the series changed while keeping identical mechanics.

The robot who wants to be human

The original game's premise is that Bomberman is a robot labouring in an underground bomb factory who has been told that escaping to the surface will turn him human. It connects to Hudson's earlier game Lode Runner - reaching the surface turns him into that game's protagonist, which is a piece of shared-universe writing nobody expected from a maze game.

Fifty stages and a strict timer

Each stage has a countdown, and running it down spawns extra enemies rather than simply ending the level, which punishes cautious play. The practical approach is to bomb efficiently in straight lines from safe positions rather than clearing the field neatly - you rarely have time to be tidy.

Why the Classic NES Series version

Nintendo's Classic NES Series reissued a set of NES games on Game Boy Advance cartridges in the early 2000s, unchanged apart from the addition of saving and the GBA's screen dimensions. It is the original game rather than a remake, which matters for a title whose appeal is entirely in its 1987 design.
