The Legend of Zelda Unblocked

Play The Legend of Zelda free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Action Adventure
Release: 1986
Platforms: Classic NES Series on GBA (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, swing your sword with Z and use your selected item with X. Press Enter to open the subscreen and choose which item sits on X - you can only have one active at a time, so switching between the bow, the boomerang and the candle is a constant part of play.

Burn bushes and bomb walls. A great many entrances in Hyrule are hidden behind scenery, and the game never marks them. The candle sets bushes alight and bombs open cracked walls; if you are stuck, the answer is usually a suspicious-looking rock face or a lone bush in an odd place.

Your sword only fires beams at full health. At full hearts Link throws his sword as a projectile, and losing a single heart takes that away - which means health is offensive capability, not just survival. Fairies and potions matter more than they look, and the blue candle, the raft and the ladder open large parts of the map.

Controls

Arrow keys — move Link in four directions
X — the B button - use the item you have selected
Z — the A button - swing the sword
Enter — START - open the subscreen to select an item
V — SELECT

Tips to Master The Legend of Zelda

There is no quest marker, no map objective and no character telling you where dungeon three is. The game expects you to explore, take notes and share findings with friends - which is exactly what happened in 1986 and is the reason Nintendo shipped it with a fold-out map. Playing it now, the honest advice is to accept that wandering is the intended activity rather than a failure state.

Eight dungeons and a second quest

Nine labyrinths hold the Triforce pieces and Ganon, each with its own map, compass and item. Finish the game and a Second Quest unlocks with entirely rearranged dungeons and harder enemies - effectively a whole extra game hidden inside the cartridge, which was an extraordinary amount of content for the hardware.

Why this is the GBA version

This is a Classic NES Series cartridge, the line Nintendo released for Game Boy Advance in the early 2000s. The game itself is unchanged, but the GBA release adds a save feature and displays at the GBA's slightly different aspect. It is the original in every way that matters, with the convenience of not needing to write down a password.

The first battery save in a console game

The NES cartridge shipped with a battery-backed save chip, which was close to unheard of and is a large part of why a game this long could exist on the hardware at all. Everything about the design - the size of Hyrule, the number of dungeons - depends on being able to stop and come back, and that is a technical decision shaping a creative one.
