Genre: Classic · Simulation
Release: 1982–1989
Platforms: Browser (custom WebAssembly DOS emulator)

Instructions

This is a genuine software preservation project: rather than a modern flight sim, it runs an emulator built from scratch in C and compiled to WebAssembly, faithfully emulating an early PC (8086, with some 286 and 386 features) well enough to boot and fly the first four Microsoft Flight Simulator releases from 1982 through 1989.

Controls follow period-appropriate DOS flight sim conventions — keyboard input for pitch, roll, and throttle, with mouse support layered in for convenience — so expect the stiffer, more deliberate feel of early flight simulation rather than a modern arcade flying game.

Because it's emulating real historical software rather than an arcade experience, there's no fixed objective beyond taking off, flying, and landing — the appeal is experiencing flight simulation exactly as it existed decades before modern versions of the same franchise.

Controls

Arrow keys — pitch and roll the aircraft
Page Up / Page Down or +/- — adjust throttle
Mouse — supplementary control input, depending on the version selected

Tips to Master The History of Microsoft Flight Simulator

Take off gently and expect a learning curve — early-1980s flight sim controls are noticeably less forgiving than modern arcade flying games.

Try more than one version

Since this collects four separate releases spanning 1982 to 1989, comparing an earlier version to a later one is a genuinely interesting way to see how quickly the simulation improved.

Use a real keyboard if you can

The project itself recommends a full keyboard for the most authentic control feel, since some period-accurate key commands don't translate cleanly to touch controls.
