The Maze of Space Goblins Unblocked

Play The Maze of Space Goblins free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Puzzle · Sokoban Match-3
Release: Sep 13, 2021
Platforms: Browser

Instructions

Move the saucer one tile at a time with the arrow keys. Goblins are pushed rather than picked up, exactly as crates are in Sokoban, which means every push is permanent unless you undo it and a goblin shoved into a corner may be impossible to recover.

Line up three or more goblins of the same colour to destroy them. Clearing them is not the objective in itself though - a room is only solved when you have collected all of its stars, so the goblins are obstacles to be removed in the right order rather than a score to farm.

Backspace undoes your last move and R resets the room completely. Both are essential rather than optional in a pushing puzzle, because the standard failure is realising four moves later that a goblin is now permanently against a wall, and stepping back is the intended way to recover.

Controls

Arrow keys — move the flying saucer one tile at a time
Backspace — undo your last move
R — reset the room from the beginning

Tips to Master The Maze of Space Goblins

The two genres pull in different directions and that tension is the puzzle. Sokoban punishes irreversible pushes; match-three encourages you to gather things together. Combining them means every group you assemble also risks stranding a goblin somewhere it can never leave, so the planning happens several moves before the match you are aiming for.

Stars are the objective, goblins are the obstacle

It is easy to spend a room clearing goblins efficiently and still fail, because the exit condition is collecting every star rather than emptying the board. Read where the stars are first and work out which goblins are blocking them, then clear only what is in the way - unnecessary matches often move a goblin into the exact square you needed to walk through.

Small enough to run on DOS

Nykanen followed the browser version with a port to MS-DOS, which is a useful measure of how tight the original is - a game written for a 13 kilobyte web budget turned out to be small enough to run on hardware from decades earlier. The art here is a single tiny sprite sheet and a bitmap font, both a fraction of a kilobyte.
