Streets of Rage Unblocked

Play Streets of Rage free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Beat 'em Up
Release: 1991
Platforms: Sega Genesis (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, attack with X and jump with Z. Repeating the attack button produces a combo that ends in a throw, and walking into a stunned enemy lets you grab them - grabbing and throwing is more reliable than trading punches, because a thrown body knocks down anyone it lands on.

Press S to call in the police. It is a one-use-per-life special that fires a rocket or drops napalm across the whole screen depending on the stage, and it does not cost you health the way a special attack does in most beat 'em ups. Saving it for the moment you are surrounded rather than firing it early is the entire skill of using it.

Pick up the weapons enemies drop. Knives, pipes and bottles all persist until you are knocked down, and they extend your reach considerably. Against the boss of a stage, arriving with a pipe in hand is worth more than arriving with full health, because reach is what keeps you out of their attack range.

Controls

Arrow keys — move in all directions
X — attack - combos when repeated
Z — jump
S — call in the police special attack
Enter — START - begin and pause

Tips to Master Streets of Rage

Koshiro wrote a custom sound driver so he could sequence the Genesis FM chip more like a club track than a game score, and the result is a soundtrack that gets cited in electronic music histories rather than only in game ones. It is not incidental to the experience - the stage design is paced to it, and playing with the sound off makes the game feel noticeably flatter.

Three characters, three trade-offs

Axel is the balanced fighter, Blaze is fastest with the weakest hits, and Adam jumps highest and hits hardest but moves slowly. Adam is missing from the sequels, which makes this the only game in the series where you can play him. Blaze's speed makes her the easiest to survive with, because in this game not being where the enemy is swinging matters more than damage output.

Two players, and the ending that depends on it

Two-player co-op is available throughout, and the final stage contains a famous branching moment: the boss offers to let you join him, and in two-player mode the players must agree. Disagreeing puts you in a fight against each other. It is an unusual piece of design for the genre and worth reaching with a friend rather than reading about.

The police special is a resource, not a panic button

You get one call per life, and it clears the screen without touching your health bar. That makes it strictly better than the health-cost specials in Final Fight, but only if you actually spend it - players routinely die holding an unused call. A good habit is to use it the moment three or more enemies have you cornered rather than waiting for the situation to get worse.
