Instructions

Shining Force alternates between exploring towns — talking to townsfolk, buying equipment, and recruiting new party members — and grid-based tactical battles where each unit's position, movement range, and attack range decide the fight.

Unlike a real-time strategy game, every unit takes its turn based on a speed stat, so predicting turn order and setting up an attack before a fast enemy can retaliate is a core part of planning each battle.

Units gain experience and eventually promote into stronger classes at high enough levels, permanently changing their stats and sometimes their abilities, so deciding who to keep in your active battle party affects who's worth leveling.

Tips to Master Shining Force

Rotate weaker units into easy fights rather than only using your strongest ones — experience matters more for units who are behind, and a full roster of leveled units is more valuable than a few overleveled favorites.

Watch turn order before committing to an attack

Since turns are speed-based rather than simply player-then-enemy, checking who acts next can prevent a unit from being exposed to a counterattack it can't survive.

Promote units as soon as they're eligible

Because promotion is a real stat and ability upgrade, delaying it costs you strength you could otherwise have going into a tough battle.
