Instructions

Shinobi III moves at a faster pace than most action platformers of its era, mixing sword strikes and thrown shuriken as Joe Musashi runs, climbs, and even rides through hazard-filled levels on things like a motorcycle or surfboard during specific sections.

Ninjutsu magic acts as a limited but powerful special attack, building up as you collect scrolls through a level and unleashing a screen-clearing effect once available, which is often the safest way to deal with a tough cluster of enemies or a boss.

Wall-climbing and quick directional attacks are used constantly to keep moving through levels built for speed, so treating the game as a fast, flowing run rather than a cautious crawl matches the pace it's designed around.

Controls

Tips to Master Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master

Save ninjutsu for genuinely dangerous moments — bosses and tough enemy clusters — rather than using it the instant the gauge fills.

Keep moving instead of turtling

The level design assumes a fast pace, and standing still to carefully approach enemies often leaves you exposed to more threats than it avoids.

Use wall-climbing to reach items and avoid ground hazards

Since walls can be climbed freely, treating them as an escape route from ground-level danger is often safer than trying to fight through it directly.
