Instructions

The game follows your cursor - move the mouse and your craft goes where you point it, with no separate movement keys to fight against. Hold the mouse button to keep firing. That leaves you one continuous decision to make at any moment, which is where the arcade pressure comes from.

The title screen carries a Controls entry alongside a fullscreen toggle, and it is worth opening before your first run since the game also accepts keyboard input. Fullscreen is more than cosmetic here: the neon effects and the CRT-style distortion read very differently at size than they do in a small embedded frame.

Enemies arrive as geometric shapes that split, rotate and multiply rather than flying fixed attack patterns. Because the whole screen is glitching by design, the reliable way to track danger is to watch the shapes rather than the colours, which are deliberately unstable.

Controls

Mouse — steer - the game tracks your cursor position directly
Hold mouse button — fire continuously
Controls menu — the title screen lists the full scheme, including keyboard

Tips to Master Evil Glitch

The 2016 theme was Glitch, and Evil Glitch took the competition's top prize by committing to it completely - the visual noise, the tearing and the unstable palette are the game rather than an effect layered on top. Beltran was later interviewed by Mozilla about the win. Every entry had to fit in 13 kilobytes with no external image or audio files of any kind.

Neon sprites, and why WebGL was the unlock

Beltran has written that he wanted glowing neon sprites for a long time and could not get there until he used WebGL. That matters for a 13 kilobyte budget because shader code is tiny compared with the artwork it replaces - a few lines of GLSL produce a glow that would cost kilobytes as pre-rendered images, which is what makes the look affordable at this size.

An arcade score chase, not a campaign

There is no story mode and no ending to reach; the game is built around surviving escalating waves and posting a better number than last time. Beltran later released an expanded arcade version with global scoreboards, which tells you how the original was meant to be played - short repeated runs where each attempt teaches you one more enemy behaviour.
