Super Mario Bros Unblocked

Play Super Mario Bros free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Platformer · Classic NES
Release: Sep 13, 1985
Platforms: Browser, Controller

Instructions

Press enter to start, move with the arrow keys, jump with Z and hold X to run - the emulator maps those to the NES A and B buttons, and X also throws fireballs once you have the Fire Flower. Holding X while you jump is the single most important habit in the game, because Mario's jump distance scales with how fast he is already moving.

There are 32 levels across eight worlds, each ending at a flagpole, with castle stages closing out every world. Hitting the flagpole higher scores more points, and the pipes, vines and hidden blocks scattered through the early worlds contain the warp zones that let you skip several worlds at once.

You can plug in a USB or Bluetooth controller and the emulator will detect it automatically, which is worth doing for a game built around precise analogue-feeling momentum on a d-pad. Save states and other emulator features are available from the menu at the bottom of the game frame.

Controls

Arrow keys — the NES d-pad - move, and duck when large
Z — the A button: jump
X — the B button: hold to run, and throw fireballs with the Fire Flower
Enter — Start - begin the game and pause
Gamepad — connect a controller and the emulator maps it automatically

Tips to Master Super Mario Bros

Mario accelerates rather than moving at a fixed speed, and he keeps sliding briefly after you release the direction key. Almost every gap in the game is tuned to that physics model, so a jump that feels impossible is usually one you attempted from a standing start. Build up a run before the gap and hold the run button through the jump and the distances become generous rather than tight.

World 1-1 is a teaching level

The opening stage is one of the most studied pieces of level design ever made. It introduces the Goomba, the question block, the mushroom and a pit in a fixed order and in a layout that makes the correct response the natural one, with no text instructions anywhere. Nintendo built it deliberately so that a player who had never held a controller would understand the rules within thirty seconds.

Running the real cartridge, not a remake

This page runs the original ROM through the EmulatorJS runtime hosted on this site, using the same emulator core as the other retro titles here. Nothing is streamed from a third-party server, which is why it works on locked-down school networks, and because it is the genuine cartridge every glitch, warp and frame-perfect trick from the original behaves the way speedrunners expect.
