Instructions

Click Make Paperclip. That is genuinely the whole game at the start, and the early minutes are meant to feel small - you are manually producing single clips and watching a counter tick. Everything that follows is built on gradually removing your need to do this yourself.

Buy AutoClippers as soon as you can afford them, then keep buying. The core loop is converting clips into money, money into production capacity, and capacity into more clips. Watch your wire supply as well as your cash, because running out of wire stops production entirely and buying more is a separate decision.

Set the price using the demand indicator. You control what your clips sell for, and pricing too high stalls sales while pricing too low leaves money on the table. The public demand figure tells you which way to move; managing that balance is the main active decision in the first act of the game.

Tips to Master Universal Paperclips

The premise comes from philosopher Nick Bostrom's paperclip maximiser - a hypothetical superintelligence given a harmless goal that pursues it without any of the limits a human would assume were implied. The game does not lecture you about this. It simply puts you in the position of the machine and lets the incentives do the arguing, which is far more effective than an essay.

Three acts, and the game changes completely

It looks like an idle clicker for perhaps twenty minutes. Then the mechanics shift - twice - into things that are structurally different games, with new resources, new interfaces and new problems. Going in unspoiled is worth protecting; a large part of the experience is the moment you realise the thing you have been optimising has changed underneath you.

Trust, creativity and the projects list

Projects unlock as you accumulate resources, and many of them trade one thing for another - spending creativity, raising trust, converting matter into wire at molecular scale. Reading the project descriptions is worth the time, because the game does most of its storytelling in that list rather than in cutscenes. The tone shifts noticeably as you go.

An incremental game that respects your time

Unlike most clickers, this one ends. There is a finish, it can be reached in a handful of hours, and it does not ask you to return daily or spend money. It also runs entirely in your browser with progress kept locally, so closing the tab keeps your state on that machine but does not carry it to another one.
