Black Hole Square Unblocked

Play Black Hole Square free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Puzzle · Minimalist
Release: Sep 13, 2021
Platforms: Browser, Mobile

Instructions

Tap or click a square to activate it. Different squares behave differently and the game never tells you which is which, so early puzzles are effectively a laboratory: touch something, watch what it does to its neighbours, and build up a mental rulebook you can apply when the layouts get harder.

Swipe right to reset the puzzle you are on, or to travel back to puzzles you have already finished. Because experimentation is the intended method, resetting is cheap and expected - there is no penalty for wrecking a board to find out how a piece behaves.

Swipe left to skip a puzzle entirely. That escape hatch matters in a game that refuses to explain itself: if one layout has you stuck, moving on and meeting the same square type in a simpler arrangement often teaches you the rule you were missing, and you can swipe back afterwards.

Tips to Master Black Hole Square

Most puzzle games front-load an explanation and then test you on it. Black Hole Square inverts that: the mechanics are the puzzle, and each new square type is a small mystery you solve by experiment. It is a design that only works at this scale, because a long game built this way would exhaust the player - here the whole thing is short enough that curiosity carries you to the end.

Minimal by constraint, not just by taste

The stark black field with sparse geometric shards is what a 13 kilobyte budget buys once you have spent the space on puzzle logic. There are no sprites and no texture files anywhere in the bundle, so every shape on screen is drawn mathematically at runtime. The look and the size limit are the same decision seen from two directions.

It installs like an app

The game ships a web manifest and a service worker, which is unusual for a jam entry and means your browser can install it to a home screen and run it with no network at all after the first visit. Three additional bonus puzzles were originally gated behind Web Monetization support during the competition; the main sequence has never required it.
