Instructions

Click a case to keep as your own - the game opens by asking you to pick the one you think holds the million. Every case you open afterwards reveals an amount that is removed from the board, and the two columns on either side track what is still in play, from one cent up to a million dollars.

Watch the board, not the cases. There is nothing to learn about which numbered case holds what - the numbers are meaningless. The only real information is which amounts remain unopened, because that is what determines both your odds and what the banker will offer.

Understand what the banker is doing. The offer is calculated from the remaining amounts and is deliberately below the true average, especially early on. As the board empties the offers get closer to fair value, which is why holding out through the first few rounds is usually correct and why the interesting decisions come late.

Tips to Master Deal or No Deal

The mathematically neutral value of your case is the average of every amount still on the board. If four cases remain holding one dollar, a thousand, ten thousand and a million, that average is a little over a quarter of a million. An offer meaningfully below that is the banker buying your risk cheaply - and an offer above it, which does occasionally happen late, is worth taking every time.

Why people take bad deals anyway

The format works because expected value is not the same as what a person should do. A guaranteed large sum is worth more to most people than a coin flip with the same average, and the show is built on that gap. Playing it as a browser game with no real money makes the mathematically correct play much easier - which is itself a good demonstration of why the televised version is tense.

The board is the whole interface

Two columns list every amount from a penny to a million, and each opened case strikes one off. Because both the low and high sides matter, a good round is one that removes small amounts and a bad one removes the top prizes. The visible asymmetry of that is what creates the drama, and the interface is designed so you can read your position instantly.

Twenty-six cases and six to go

The opening round asks you to open several cases before the first offer, and the counter in the corner tracks how many are left before the banker calls. Later rounds require fewer openings each, so the pace accelerates - the early game is a formality and the last few decisions carry almost all the weight.
