Instructions

Move with WASD or the arrow keys and aim with the mouse. The thirteen-second timer is not a difficulty setting, it is the structure of the game - you are not expected to finish a run inside it, so treat each attempt as a scouting trip that ends on schedule rather than a failure you could have avoided.

The game's own line is that a file is never really deleted. Each time the antivirus removes you, the execution backtrace from that attempt persists and gives the next run a foothold further in, so progress accumulates across deaths rather than within any single life.

Backspace runs kill -9 on your own process, ending the current attempt immediately. That sounds like a joke and it is one, but it is also practical: once a run has gone wrong there is no reason to wait out the remaining seconds when you could be starting the next one with the trace you just earned.

Controls

WASD / arrow keys — move through the alien network
Mouse — aim and fire
Backspace — kill the process yourself and restart the run early

Tips to Master XX142-B2.exe

The deletion timer is set to thirteen seconds because the competition's limit is thirteen kilobytes, and the 2019 theme was Back, which the game reads as coming back from deletion again and again. Very few jam entries manage to fold the contest's own constraints into their fiction this cleanly, and the judges gave it the top prize across the whole field.

Death as the progression system

Because the backtrace from each attempt carries forward, dying is how you advance rather than how you lose. That inverts the usual instinct to play cautiously - spending a run pushing recklessly into unexplored network to see what is there is often worth more than surviving the full timer in territory you have already mapped.

A WebGL renderer inside the byte limit

The game requires WebGL and will not run without it, which is what buys the lighting and the volumetric look the entry was praised for. Clark and Previti released the source under the MIT licence, and it remains a reference for how much visual ambition is achievable when the shaders are written by hand instead of the assets being shipped.
