Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, jump with Z, and use your whip (or whatever item you are currently holding, like a bomb or rope) with X; the whip is the default melee weapon against most early threats before better items are found.

Ropes let you descend safely past a ledge that would otherwise deal fall damage, and bombs can blast through walls to open shortcuts or dig toward hidden treasure, but both are limited items that need to be used carefully rather than spent on any convenient wall.

Every level is randomly generated fresh each time you play, and death sends you back to the very beginning of a brand-new cave with no saved progress, so no single run's layout can be memorized or relied upon for a future attempt.

Tips to Master Spelunky

Because there is no save progress and levels are randomly generated each time, dying anywhere in a run sends you back to a brand-new first level rather than resuming near where you died — this makes cautious, damage-avoiding play more valuable than a fast, reckless run through familiar-looking terrain that will never actually repeat.

Ropes and bombs are limited resources, not free tools

Since both ropes and bombs are carried in limited quantities rather than being freely available, using a bomb to blast through every wall out of curiosity or a rope on a fall that could be survived some other way leaves fewer available for a genuine emergency later in that same run.

The whip has limited range and needs positioning

Because the whip is a short-range melee weapon rather than a ranged one, engaging an enemy requires closing to whip range, which is also the range most enemies need to hit back — approaching from an angle where the enemy cannot immediately retaliate is safer than a straight head-on approach.
