The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Unblocked

Play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Action Adventure
Release: 1991
Platforms: SNES (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, swing your sword with X and use whatever item you have equipped with Z. The A key is the action button - it lifts pots, throws them, talks to people and, once you have the Pegasus Boots, makes Link run. Press Enter to open the inventory and swap the item on Z.

Cut everything. Bushes, pots and grass hide rupees, hearts and bombs, and the game expects you to be constantly harvesting them - your supply of arrows and bombs comes almost entirely from destroying scenery rather than from shops. It also hides staircases and switches under objects you would otherwise walk past.

Every dungeon gives you the item that beats it. Find the big chest, take what is in it, and the boss at the end will be vulnerable to exactly that. If a boss looks impossible, the answer is nearly always the item you just picked up rather than better reflexes - and that item usually also opens a part of the overworld you could not reach before.

Controls

Arrow keys — move Link in eight directions
X — swing the sword
Z — use the equipped item
A — lift, throw, run and talk - the action button
Enter — START - open the inventory and map

Tips to Master The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Partway in, the Dark World opens - a corrupted mirror of the overworld where the geography matches but the terrain does not. A cliff in one world is a bridge in the other, so reaching an unreachable spot means crossing over, walking somewhere, and crossing back. It is a genuinely elegant puzzle structure and it turns the map into two maps that have to be solved together.

The Master Sword sequence

The first act builds to pulling the Master Sword from its pedestal in the Lost Woods, which requires three pendants from three dungeons. It is one of the most-copied story beats in games, and the moment it happens the tone of the whole game changes - what looked like a rescue mission becomes something much larger. Everything before it is effectively a long prologue.

Bottles are the best items in the game

There are four bottles hidden around the world and they are easy to miss. Each can hold a fairy that revives you automatically on death, or a potion that refills health and magic. Carrying four fairies is effectively four extra lives, and it is the single biggest difference between struggling in the late dungeons and walking through them.

The battery save, and what that meant

Three save slots on the cartridge let you stop and come back, which sounds unremarkable now and was a significant design freedom in 1991 - it is why the game could be this large. In the emulator that save lives in your browser rather than on a chip, so the emulator's own save states are worth using alongside it for anything you would be upset to lose.
