Instructions

This copy of Final Fantasy VI is the original Japanese release, so all on-screen text — menus, dialogue, and item names — appears in Japanese rather than English. If you're not comfortable reading Japanese, you can still explore the world, fight battles, and enjoy the presentation, but following the story closely will be difficult.

The game is a turn-based RPG built around a large ensemble cast rather than a single hero, with characters gradually joining your party and each contributing a different mix of physical skills and Esper-taught magic to your battle options.

Magic is learned by equipping Espers to characters and gaining Magic Points from battles over time, rather than characters knowing spells automatically, so deciding which Esper to assign to which party member is a real ongoing choice.

Tips to Master Final Fantasy VI (Japanese Version)

Rotate Espers between characters instead of leaving them fixed. Since magic is earned gradually through equipped Espers, spreading them around over time builds a more well-rounded set of spellcasters than committing to one setup permanently.

Keep a varied party for boss fights

Because several major fights lean on specific elemental weaknesses or status effects, having more than one approach available in your active party matters more than always fielding your strongest characters.

Save often, especially before major story points

As with most SNES-era RPGs, save data is your only safety net, and this game in particular has story turns worth preserving a save before.
