Donkey Kong Land Unblocked

Play Donkey Kong Land free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Platformer
Release: 1995
Platforms: Game Boy (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Run with the arrow keys, jump with Z and hold X to run and roll. Rolling off the end of a platform and jumping mid-roll extends your jump distance considerably, which is the technique the level design assumes you know - several gaps simply cannot be crossed without it.

Swap between Donkey and Diddy with V. Donkey is heavier and can defeat larger enemies with a ground slap, while Diddy is faster and jumps further. Losing one leaves you playing as the other alone, and finding a DK barrel restores your partner - so a barrel is effectively an extra life.

Watch the screen size, not the level. The Game Boy's small viewport is the real difficulty here: enemies and pits appear with much less warning than they would on a television, so the safe approach is to move deliberately and let the screen scroll ahead of you rather than running blind.

Controls

Arrow keys — run, duck and climb
Z — jump
X — run, roll, and pick up barrels
Enter — START - begin and pause
V — SELECT - swap between Donkey and Diddy

Tips to Master Donkey Kong Land

The Country games rendered 3D models and converted them to sprites, which gave them a distinctive pre-rendered look. Doing that with four shades of grey on a screen a fraction of the size meant reducing each character to a readable silhouette with just enough shading to suggest volume. The result is dense and occasionally hard to read, but as a technical exercise it is remarkable.

New levels, not a port

Rare built original stages rather than shrinking the console game's, which is why Donkey Kong Land has its own identity. Some sections are noticeably harder than anything in Country, partly because the smaller screen removes reaction time. Treat it as a third game in the series rather than as a portable version of the first.

Barrels, and the animal buddies

Barrels are throwable weapons, containers for your missing partner and, in blast form, level transport. Rambi the rhino and Expresso the ostrich return as rideable animal buddies with their own movement rules. Learning which barrels are worth carrying to the next screen instead of throwing immediately is a real part of playing well.

A password system

Progress is kept with passwords rather than a battery save, so write yours down before closing the tab. It is worth noting that the emulator's own save states work alongside this and are considerably more convenient - the password system was designed for a machine you turned off rather than a browser tab you might close accidentally.
