Instructions

Click a column to drop your token into it. Gravity does the rest - the piece falls to the lowest empty slot, which is the constraint that makes the game interesting. You cannot choose a row, only a column, so every move you make also decides what square your opponent gains access to.

Take the centre column early. The middle column participates in more possible four-in-a-rows than any other, and in a standard seven-by-six grid the first player wins with perfect play by starting there. If you are going second, contesting the centre is more valuable than starting your own line at the edge.

Watch the square above your move. Dropping a token gives your opponent the slot directly above it, so placing a piece that hands them the winning square is the most common way beginners lose. Before every move, look at what completing your own threat would open up for them.

Tips to Master Connect 4

Serious Connect 4 strategy turns on which row your threats sit in. Because pieces stack, a threat on an odd-numbered row tends to favour the first player and an even-numbered row the second. You do not need the full theory to benefit - just noticing whether a developing threat will complete on a row you control the timing of is enough to win more games.

Build two threats at once

A single line of three is easy to block. The winning pattern is a move that creates two separate ways to make four, because your opponent can only stop one of them. Setting that up usually means building horizontally along a row while keeping a diagonal open, rather than pushing one obvious line and hoping it is not noticed.

A solved game, which is part of the fun

Connect 4 was solved in 1988 - with perfect play from both sides, the first player wins by moving in the centre column. That does not spoil it in practice, because perfect play requires seeing far enough ahead that almost nobody manages it over the board. What it does mean is that going first is a genuine advantage worth alternating between games.

Playing against a person

The two-player mode shares one mouse and one screen, which suits the game well - turns are short, there is nothing hidden, and the whole board is visible to both players at all times. Against the computer the difficulty is fixed, and most players find the AI beatable once they start looking one move ahead at what each drop opens up.
