Contra III: The Alien Wars Unblocked

Play Contra III: The Alien Wars free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Run and Gun
Release: 1992
Platforms: SNES (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move and aim with the arrow keys, fire with S and jump with X. The big change from earlier Contra games is that you carry two weapons at once and swap between them with Z, so a power-up never has to be a painful choice. Press A to set off a smart bomb, which clears the screen and is meant to be spent rather than hoarded.

Learn the shoulder buttons. Holding Q or E locks your aim in the direction you are currently facing while letting you keep running - which is the only way to back away from something while still shooting at it. Almost every hard section in the game becomes manageable once you stop trying to solve it with movement alone.

You die in one hit, so treat positioning as the whole game. Learn where enemies enter the screen, stay near the middle where you have room to dodge in either direction, and remember that the Spread gun is forgiving but the Laser does far more damage to bosses. Two players can share the screen, which halves the pressure on each of you but doubles the chaos.

Controls

Arrow keys — run, crouch and aim
S — fire your weapon
X — jump
Z — switch between your two weapons
A — detonate a smart bomb

Tips to Master Contra III: The Alien Wars

Every Contra before this one made power-ups a gamble: pick up the wrong gun and you were stuck with it. Contra III gives you two slots and a swap button, which quietly changes how you play. You can hold a Spread for crowds and a Laser for bosses and switch at the moment it matters, and you can grab an unknown power-up without fear because your good weapon is still parked in the other slot. It also means dying costs you less, since you only lose what you were holding rather than everything you had built up.

The overhead stages

Two of the six stages drop the side view entirely and put you above the action, rotating the whole floor around you as you turn. This is the SNES Mode 7 effect used as a design idea rather than a showpiece: you have to find and destroy a set of targets scattered across a rotating arena while the camera keeps reorienting under your feet. Players tend to either love these stages or find them disorienting, and they are the part of the game most obviously built to show off what the new hardware could do that the NES could not.

Difficulty as the point

Contra III is hard on purpose and honest about it. Enemies fire patterns rather than random shots, bosses telegraph every attack, and a death almost always traces back to a decision you can identify and change. That is the difference between this and a game that is merely unfair - repetition genuinely makes you better at it. The Easy setting shortens the game rather than simply weakening enemies, so players who want to see all six stages should start on Normal even if the first attempts are short.

Where it sits in the series

Contra and Super C established the formula on the NES; Contra III refined it with better hardware and is generally regarded as the peak of the 2D run-and-gun era, alongside Konami's own later Hard Corps on the Genesis. It was also released outside Japan under different names - Super Probotector in Europe, where the human commandos were replaced with robots to satisfy stricter content rules of the time. This is the North American release, so you play as Bill and Lance rather than their robot stand-ins.
