Genre: Arcade · Light Cycles
Release: 2000s
Platforms: Browser (Flash via Ruffle)

Instructions

Steer with the arrow keys. You cannot stop, slow down or reverse - the cycle moves constantly and the only input you have is which way to turn. Every path you take leaves a permanent wall, so the arena you are driving in gets smaller with every second that passes.

Do not fill your own space early. The instinctive opening is to carve tight turns near your opponent, but that spends your own room faster than theirs. Hugging the outer edge for the first few seconds and letting them commit to a shape is a much stronger opening, because whoever runs out of room first loses regardless of who was more aggressive.

Matches run to three, and there are six levels plus a final Level Omega. Press space to continue between rounds. The computer opponent gets sharper at each level and the taunts between matches escalate, so treat the early levels as practice for reading how the AI commits to a direction.

Controls

Arrow keys — steer your light cycle - player one
A / D / W / S — steer the second cycle in two-player mode
Space — continue between rounds

Tips to Master FL-TRON 2.0

The winning technique is enclosure. Rather than trying to make your opponent hit a wall directly, you drive a line that seals off the region they are in and gives yourself the larger remaining area. Once the arena is split, the outcome is already decided - the player with more space simply spirals inward until the other one runs out. Good players are thinking about area, not collisions.

Two players on one keyboard

The title screen offers one or two players, and the two-player mode shares a keyboard with the second cycle on a separate key cluster. It is the mode worth loading the game for - the AI is predictable once you learn it, whereas a human opponent trying to enclose you at the same moment you are trying to enclose them produces the tense standoffs the concept is built for.

A fan game, not the official Tron

This is not Disney's arcade Tron or any licensed release. It is one of the many independent light cycle games that appeared during the Flash era, and Dan Hsu's version stood out for its presentation - the styled logo, the level structure and the between-round trash talk gave it more personality than the usual bare-grid implementations of the idea.

Flash preserved with Ruffle

Browsers dropped Flash support at the end of 2020, so this runs through Ruffle, an open-source reimplementation of the Flash player written in Rust. It loads from this site rather than from an external CDN, which means it keeps working on school and office networks that block outside domains - the exact situation where a game like this is most likely to be wanted.
