Instructions

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduces elemental shields found through levels — fire, lightning, and bubble — each granting a unique extra ability like a mid-air dash, a ring-attracting effect, or safe underwater breathing, on top of blocking one hit.

Knuckles appears throughout as a rival rather than a partner, ambushing you at points across several zones, which adds an obstacle earlier Sonic games didn't have on top of the usual platforming hazards.

The game was built to connect directly into its follow-up, Sonic & Knuckles, using lock-on hardware to combine both games into one longer adventure — playing this on its own still tells a complete story, but it was designed as the first half of a bigger whole.

Tips to Master Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Pick up a shield before a zone known for hazards suited to it — the lightning shield's ring magnet and the bubble shield's underwater safety both solve specific problems better than going in unshielded.

Expect Knuckles' ambushes and don't panic when they happen

Since his appearances are a scripted part of certain zones rather than random, learning where they occur removes most of the surprise on repeat plays.

Save progress between play sessions

This was one of the first Sonic games with save support, so use it — there's no need to replay earlier zones from scratch after a break.
