Play Pushback free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Puzzle · Block Pushing
Release: 2010s
Platforms: Browser, Mobile

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys on a keyboard, or swipe on a touchscreen - the game listens for both and needs no configuration to switch between them. Movement is grid-based rather than free, so each input is a discrete step rather than a continuous motion.

As the name says, the mechanic is pushing. Blocks move when you walk into them and they do not pull, which is the defining constraint of every puzzle in this family: a block shoved against a wall can no longer be moved along that axis, and one pushed into a corner is stuck for good.

Because of that, the useful habit is to plan the last move first. Work out which square each block has to end on, then reason backwards to where you need to be standing to push it there, rather than pushing blocks toward their targets and hoping the geometry works out.

Controls

Arrow keys — move and push
Swipe — touch controls work on phones and tablets
Tap / click — start the game and confirm menu choices

Tips to Master Pushback

Pulling is not available, and that single omission is what creates the genre. Every push permanently reduces the set of positions a block can still reach, so mistakes are not recoverable by retracing your steps - they are recoverable only by restarting. That is why experienced players of these games think several moves ahead rather than improvising.

Particle rendering on the GPU

The speckled look comes from shader work rather than artwork: the game uses floating-point textures and custom GLSL programs to build its surfaces on the graphics card each frame. That is why a game with this much visual texture still fits in one small file - the detail is computed at runtime, not stored.

Built for both input methods from the start

Rather than bolting touch on afterwards, the game registers touch and keyboard handlers together, so a swipe and an arrow key produce the same grid step. That makes it genuinely equivalent on a phone and a Chromebook, which is unusual - most keyboard puzzles ported to touch end up with cramped virtual d-pads.
