Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel Unblocked

Play Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Stealth · Action
Release: 2000
Platforms: Game Boy Color (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, attack with X and use your equipped item with Z. Press Enter to open the menu where weapons and items are equipped separately - you always have one of each active, and switching quickly between them is most of the moment-to-moment play.

Watch the guards' vision cones and stay out of them. Getting spotted triggers an alert that brings reinforcements, and the correct response to an alert is almost always to break line of sight and hide until it times out rather than to fight. Flattening against a wall lets you peer around corners without stepping into view.

Use the Codec constantly. Calling your support team gives hints about the area you are in, the boss you are stuck on and the equipment you should be carrying. The game hides a great deal of its guidance behind optional conversations, and players who never call tend to conclude it is more obtuse than it is.

Controls

Arrow keys — move Snake, and press against a wall to flatten
X — attack, punch or fire the equipped weapon
Z — use the equipped item
Enter — START - open the menu, weapons and items
V — SELECT - Codec

Tips to Master Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel

Rather than emulate the PlayStation game's camera, Ghost Babel returns to the overhead view of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 on the MSX2. That choice is why it works - stealth needs you to see the guard patrols you are avoiding, and a small screen with a fixed overhead view communicates that far better than a cramped 3D camera could.

A story that is not quite canon

Ghost Babel is set in an alternate continuity branching after the first Metal Gear, which is why the Japanese title is different from the Western one. Kojima supervised rather than directed it. That freedom let the writers tell a self-contained story with its own cast and ending rather than fitting into an increasingly complicated timeline.

Thirteen levels and a lot of extra modes

The main campaign runs thirteen stages, but the cartridge also carries a large VR training mode with over a hundred missions covering sneaking, weapons and puzzle scenarios. That bulk is unusual for a handheld game of the period and it is why the cartridge has a reputation for value as well as quality.

Boss fights on a small screen

The bosses are the standout sequences - each is a pattern puzzle fought in a confined arena with a specific weapon or tactic as the answer. Because the viewport is small, the designers had to make every tell readable at a glance, and the result is a set of fights that are legible and fair in a way a lot of larger stealth games are not.
