Line Rider Unblocked

Play Line Rider free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Sandbox · Physics Toy
Release: Sep 2006
Platforms: Browser

Instructions

Draw with the mouse. Every line you drag becomes solid ground, and when you press play Bosh sets off from the start and travels along whatever you have built, governed by a simulated physics model that handles momentum and gravity rather than following your line as a fixed path.

Smoothness is everything. A track made of short segments meeting at sharp angles will throw the rider off his sled, so long gentle curves built from overlapping strokes are what carry speed. Most of the skill in Line Rider is learning to draw a curve the physics will accept.

There is no failure state to avoid and nothing to complete, so the game rewards iteration rather than caution. Draw a section, run it, watch where the rider comes off, adjust that one corner and run it again - the entire community that grew around this game works that way.

Controls

Mouse drag — draw the lines your rider will travel along
Play button — release Bosh onto the track you have drawn
Pencil / eraser tools — switch between drawing and removing line segments

Tips to Master Line Rider

Line Rider ships with no objective at all, which is why it was voted best webtoy rather than best game in 2006. That absence turned out to be its strength: without a designer's goal to satisfy, players invented their own, and elaborate hand-drawn courses synchronised to music became a genre of their own on early YouTube.

From student project to McDonald's advert

Čadež built it as coursework and it escaped almost immediately, picked up by Yahoo and Time's website and eventually appearing in McDonald's advertising in 2008. The original Flash version was replaced by a Silverlight build in July of that year, and a spiritual successor with recording and editing tools followed in 2015.

Preserved through Ruffle

The version here is the original Flash file, interpreted by Ruffle - an open-source Flash Player reimplementation written in Rust. Browsers removed Flash support entirely at the end of 2020, so emulation is the only remaining way to run the real thing. Both the emulator and the game load from this site rather than an external CDN, so nothing depends on a third party staying online.
