Genre: Platformer
Release: 1995
Platforms: Game Boy (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, jump with Z and inhale with X. Pressing down while a swallowed enemy is in your mouth copies its ability instead of spitting it out - that is the central mechanic and the thing missing from the first Dream Land. You can drop an ability at any time to pick up a different one.

Find and ride the animal friends. Rick the hamster gives you grip on ice and slopes, Kine the fish swims properly against currents, and Coo the owl flies steadily through wind that would blow Kirby around. Each also modifies whatever ability you are carrying, so a spark power on Coo is a different weapon to a spark power on foot.

Collect the Rainbow Drops to see the true ending. They are hidden one per world behind puzzles that usually require a specific ability and a specific animal friend together, which is the game's real challenge. Finishing without them gives you a shorter, unsatisfying conclusion, so exploring properly is worth the time.

Controls

Arrow keys — walk, duck and aim; hold up to float
Z — jump, and flap to stay airborne
X — inhale, then press again to spit or swallow to copy a power
Enter — START - begin and pause
V — SELECT

Tips to Master Kirby's Dream Land 2

There are seven copy abilities and three animal friends, and almost every combination produces a distinct attack - burning while riding Kine is not the same as burning on foot. That multiplication is how a Game Boy game gets a movelist much larger than its memory should allow, and it is the reason this entry is remembered fondly rather than as a smaller Kirby's Adventure.

The animal friends solve terrain

Each friend is really a movement solution to a specific hazard: Rick for slippery ground, Kine for strong currents, Coo for wind. Levels are built with those hazards in mind, so part of the puzzle is noticing which friend a section wants and going back for them. Losing a friend to a hit is a genuine setback rather than a minor inconvenience.

Dark Matter, and a series arc beginning

The true final boss is Dark Matter, an entity possessing King Dedede rather than Dedede himself, and it is the start of a story thread that continues through Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64. For a series usually treated as self-contained and cheerful, this trilogy has a surprisingly consistent through-line, and it starts here.

How it sits against the first game

Kirby's Dream Land was deliberately built as an easy entry point with no copy abilities at all. This sequel keeps the accessible surface - unlimited flight, plentiful health - while putting the real challenge in optional collection. That two-layer approach became the standard Kirby design and it works particularly well here, because the Rainbow Drop puzzles are genuinely difficult.
