Kid Icarus Unblocked

Play Kid Icarus free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Platformer · Action Adventure
Release: 1986
Platforms: NES (emulated in browser)

Instructions

Move with the arrow keys, jump with Z and fire arrows with X, then press Enter to start. Pit shoots straight ahead by default and can aim upward while standing still, which is essential because a great many enemies approach from above in the climbing stages.

The first three stages scroll vertically, and this is where new players lose runs. The screen only moves upward - fall below the bottom edge and you die instantly, no matter how much health you have. Treat every jump as one-way and never drop back down to collect something you missed.

Hearts dropped by enemies are the game's currency, not score. Spend them in the shops hidden behind doors on each stage, where you can buy health restoration, arrow upgrades and useful items. Saving hearts for a shop is almost always better than pushing on underequipped, because the fortress stages punish a weak bow badly.

Controls

Arrow keys — walk left and right, crouch, aim upward
Z — jump
X — fire an arrow
Enter — START - begin the game and pause
V — SELECT - menu and password entry

Tips to Master Kid Icarus

Angel Land is split into vertically scrolling climbs, horizontally scrolling stretches and enclosed fortress mazes that end in a boss. The fortresses are the sharpest change: they are room-to-room labyrinths rather than a straight route, and you need the Pencil item or a good memory to map them. That structural variety is what makes Kid Icarus feel closer to an action adventure than a pure platformer.

The famous eggplant problem

The Eggplant Wizard is one of the best-known enemies in the NES library for a reason. Being hit by its projectile turns Pit into a walking eggplant who cannot attack at all, and the only cure is to reach a hospital room inside the fortress. It is a status effect rather than damage, and it is the moment most players discover that Kid Icarus is willing to make life genuinely inconvenient rather than simply hard.

Passwords instead of saves

Like most cartridges of the era Kid Icarus has no battery save, and instead gives you a password when you finish a stage. Write it down if you want to continue later, because a browser tab closing takes your progress with it. The password system is also notoriously exploitable - the game encodes your stats loosely enough that hand-edited passwords have been a part of its culture for decades.

How the difficulty actually works

Kid Icarus has a reputation for being unfair, but most of what kills new players is a single design decision: enemies respawn continuously while you climb, and the spawn rate does not slow down if you stop to fight. Standing your ground is therefore always the wrong answer in the vertical stages, because the game can generate enemies faster than you can shoot them. Keep climbing and accept the hits you cannot avoid. The game also tracks a hidden score that determines which ending you get and how strong Pit becomes, which rewards thorough play in the fortresses even though nothing on screen tells you so.
