Ice Climber Unblocked

Play Ice Climber free online — no download, no install, playable on any Chromebook or school laptop.

Genre: Arcade Platformer
Release: 1985
Platforms: Game Boy Advance (Classic NES Series, emulated in browser)

Instructions

Walk with the left and right arrows, jump with Z and swing your hammer with X. To climb, stand under a block of ice, swing upward to break it, and jump through the gap. Your hammer only breaks the block directly overhead, so lining yourself up matters more than timing does.

Get used to the jump. You have almost no air control compared to later Nintendo platformers, so a jump is largely committed the moment you leave the ground - aim before you press rather than trying to steer mid-flight. You also take damage from landing on a topi or a seal rather than bouncing off it, which is the opposite of what Mario has trained most players to expect.

Every eighth mountain ends in a bonus stage where a condor flies overhead. Jumping and grabbing it is worth a large score bonus, and missing it costs you nothing but the points - so it is always worth the attempt. Watch its flight path for a moment before committing rather than jumping the instant it appears.

Controls

Left / Right arrows — walk
Z — jump
X — swing your hammer
Enter — START - begin and pause
V — SELECT - choose one or two players

Tips to Master Ice Climber

Most platform games ask you to find the route someone else laid out. Ice Climber asks you to make one. The blocks above you are the level, and your hammer is the tool that turns them into a staircase - which means two players climbing the same mountain are constantly changing the terrain under each other. It is a small inversion of a familiar idea and it gives the game a texture nothing else on the NES really has. It also means a mountain can be made harder by careless smashing, since a hole in the wrong place can strand you.

Topis, seals and the nudge

The recurring enemies are the topis, small creatures that push blocks of ice sideways to repair the holes you have made, and the seals, which simply block your path. Neither is difficult on its own; the difficulty is that they act while you are mid-climb and you cannot adjust once you are airborne. In the original Japanese release the enemy was a seal, changed to a yeti-like creature outside Japan - one of the more curious localisation decisions of the era.

A second life through Smash Bros.

Ice Climber would probably be a footnote if the Ice Climbers had not been added as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee in 2001. Popo and Nana appear as a pair - you control one and the other follows - which turned a fifteen-year-old NES curiosity into a character a whole generation recognised before ever playing the original. It is one of the clearest examples of Smash Bros. functioning as Nintendo's own museum.

Two players, mixed blessing

The two-player mode is simultaneous rather than alternating, which was still relatively uncommon in 1985. It is also, famously, a good way to fall out with someone: since both climbers share one screen, the player who climbs faster drags the camera upward and can scroll the slower one off the bottom, killing them. Whether this is a flaw or the best thing about the mode depends entirely on who you are playing with.
