Instructions

Player one uses the arrow keys: left and right to run, up to jump. Player two uses A and D to run and W to jump. That is the complete control scheme for both sides. Both players' keys can be reassigned from the Team Menu by opening a Player Menu and choosing Set Keys.

You strike the ball by colliding with it, so the jump is your most important control. A header at the top of a jump sends the ball on a completely different trajectory to a shot taken off your feet, and timing a jump so the ball meets your head on the way up is how goals get scored from distance.

Set the match length before you start. The Options screen offers one, two, three or five minutes, along with four AI skill settings, and it defaults to a two minute match against a medium opponent. On the Team Menu you can pick national sides and untick Computer to make the second player human.

Controls

Left / Right arrows — player one runs
Up arrow — player one jumps and heads the ball

Tips to Master 1 on 1 Soccer

Removing pass, shoot and tackle sounds like a limitation but it is the reason the game is immediately playable by anyone. There is nothing to learn and no combo to memorise, so a person who has never seen it is competitive in about ten seconds - and yet the physics are consistent enough that a practised player will reliably beat a newcomer. That gap is the mark of a well-judged simple game.

Players with different attributes

Each team's Player Menu lets you pick a named footballer with visible Power, Speed and Jump ratings shown as bars. The trade-offs are real - a high jump rating helps you win aerial balls but a faster player reaches loose balls first, and against a human opponent picking to counter their choice is a genuine layer of the game before kickoff.

Playing it against a person

The AI is a reasonable opponent at higher skill settings, but this is a two-player game first. Both sets of controls sit on the same keyboard with enough separation that two people can share it comfortably, and the short match lengths make it well suited to the few minutes between other things - which is precisely the use case a browser football game needs to serve.

Flash, running through Ruffle

This is a Flash game from the era when flashkit-hosted sports titles were everywhere, and Flash itself was discontinued at the end of 2020. It plays here through Ruffle, the open-source Flash player reimplementation, loaded locally rather than from a content delivery network so that it still works on networks which block external domains.
